Government Official Says Ministry of Defence Investigating Security Risk from Vehicles from China, with Staff Told to Refrain from Confidential Discussions in Cars.

An defense official has confirmed that the Ministry of Defence is actively looking into the potential threats posed by Chinese-made vehicles, while staff have been told to refrain from discussing secret information in all vehicles.

Security Guidance for MoD Staff

In a recently aired interview on a radio station, Luke Pollard addressed reports that MoD officials have been told not to talk about classified material while riding in China-made vehicles.

The minister stated that the ministry is “looking into” cars from China within its vehicle pools, however noted that security is a concern in all contemporary vehicles.

Our department has a fleet of thousands of vehicles in the MoD and those vehicles account for a tiny fraction.
However regardless of if you’re driving a vehicle from China or a non-Chinese car, what we’ve asked our people is to avoid connecting Ministry of Defence devices into their car, not to have conversations at a classified classification in any vehicle, because of the increasing threats of eavesdropping that exist in all automobile, to restrict those confidential conversations in protected areas. That’s a wise and sensible thing for anyone concerned about security.

When it was suggested that it would be prudent for the ministry to stop using all Chinese vehicles, the minister replied: That is precisely what we are looking into at the present time.”

Broader Defence Background

The revelation comes as reports from Norway and Denmark have warned the UK to the existence of multi-purpose shutdown mechanisms in Chinese-made buses, which could allow China to switch off buses and bring disruption to public transit.

Additionally, a Russian spy ship has been shining laser beams at Royal Air Force aircrew, labeled a “extremely risky” act by government representatives.

The broader defence situation underscores the importance of robust protocols and vigilance in all aspects of official operations, from vehicle use to discussions habits.
